Green Labor Day Tips

Labor Day is already around the corner. This year make your Labor Day celebration environmentally friendly. We have complied some great tips that are easy for everyone. Let us all celebrate Labor Day in a green way and set the mood for the rest of this year’s celebrations.

Tips For a Green Labor Day Celebration

Try out these tips for your Labor Day gatherings!
  • Evites: Instead of mailing out paper invitations for your Labor Day shindig send them out electronically. You can do this through email, a Facebook group, or even text. Sending them electronically also helps you to keep better track of RSVPs so you know how many people to expect and can better prepare.
  • Daylight: If you have your Labor Day celebrations during the day you can take advantage of the natural sunlight and do not have to use energy to provide light for your guests. If your celebration goes into the night, you can use candles to create a relaxing atmosphere and cut back on energy costs.
  • Skip Disposables: Use reusable plates, cups, cutlery, and serving dishes. Doing this helps cut down on the waste from paper plates, cups, and plastic cutlery. If you are having a large gathering and do not have enough reusable dishes for everyone, you can ask guests to bring their own or buy compostable and biodegradable dishes and cutlery that are better for the environment.
  • Carpool: Whether you are hosting a Labor Day celebration or going to one, look for someone to carpool with or encourage your guests to do so. The more people that carpool the less carbon emissions that will be emitted when traveling that day. It is a way to help cut down on the traffic of Labor Day as well.
  • Recycling Bins: Be sure to have out recycling bins at your gathering. Having them out encourages your guests to use them and saves you the time of digging through the trash for recyclables at the end of the day. It is another easy way to celebrate the day with friends and family in a green way.
  • Buy Locally: Buying your food locally for your gathering is a great way to support your local economy and cut down on the carbon footprint of your food chain. Plus, there are a ton of great local produce varieties available this time of year that are great for cookouts and large gatherings.
  • Pitchers for Beverages: Using pitchers for drinks reduces waste especially if you have reusable cups available or compostable ones. Also, buying in bulk is usually cheaper than buying individual serving sizes for beverages. Therefore, you can help your wallet and the environment at the same time.

Utility costs are on the rise and there’s no sign of them slowing down. Consumers are feeling the pressure of constantly climbing electricity rates. As inflation continues to affect nearly every industry and energy demand increases, utility companies are charging more, which means your bills are getting higher. In fact, many experts agree that utility prices will only continue to increase, making it harder for households and businesses to keep their budgets under control. NYSERDA provides detailed information on historical energy rates throughout New York State for example. These patterns follow the same trends nationwide.
